Although price is the most important consideration before making a purchase decision, fuel economy is another criterion that plays an important role when buying a car.

With the deluge of models in the segment, choosing the right car that ticks most of the right boxes is quite confusing. To help you in your search, we provide you with a list of SUVs with the best mileage in India, take a look.


Maruti Suzuki and Toyota JV recently launched two new SUV models – Grand Vitara and Hyryder. Both SUVs are based on the Suzuki Global C platform and are manufactured at Toyota’s Bidadi plant in Karnataka. Two engine options are offered for the new models – 1.5L NA petrol and 1.5L TNGA petrol with a powerful hybrid system. The powerful hybrid version features a TNGA 3-cylinder 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine mated to a 177.6V lithium-ion battery.

The power of this engine is 92.45 horsepower and the maximum power and torque is 115.5 hp and 122 Nm. This engine comes with Toyota’s e-CVT, which is also offered in the Yaris Cross global hybrid. It is claimed to offer an ARAI certified fuel economy of 27.89 kmpl, making the new Grand Vitara and Hyryder the most fuel efficient SUVs in India.

Kia Motors has entered the sub-4 meter SUV segment with the Sonet SUV, which is available in the price range of Rs 6.79 lakh to Rs 13.25 lakh. The SUV competes with Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue and Ford EcoSport and Mahindra XUV300. It is available with three engines – 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol, 1.5-litre turbodiesel and 1.2-litre NA petrol.

The 1.0-litre engine produces 118bhp and 175Nm of torque, while the 1.2-litre NA engine produces 83bhp and 115Nm of torque. The diesel engine produces 99 horsepower and 240 Nm of torque with a manual transmission. The power of the automatic diesel is 113 hp and the torque is 250 Nm.

The diesel MT has an ARAI-certified fuel economy of 24.1 kmpl, while the diesel AT is claimed to return 19 kmpl. The 1.2-litre petrol version has a certified mileage of 18.4 kmpl, while the turbo petrol MT and DCT deliver 18.2 kmpl and 18.3 kmpl respectively. The iMT version also returns a mileage of 18.2 km/pl.

Honda Cars India launched an SUV based on the Jazz hatchback in early 2017. The Honda WR-V compact SUV does quite well in the competitive market. Despite its small dimensions, the WR-V offers best-in-class cabin space with a very practical layout. It is also the only car in its segment with a sunroof. The main factor that makes it one of the most desirable SUVs is its highly efficient engine lineup.

The compact SUV is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre i-VTEC diesel engine, available with 5-speed and 6-speed manual transmissions. The power of the gasoline unit is 89 hp with a torque of 110 Nm, the oil burner develops a maximum power of 99 hp with a torque of 200 Nm.

In BSVI form, Honda WR-V’s fuel economy is 16.5 kmpl on petrol and 23.7 kmpl on diesel. With such impressive mileage, the WR-V tops the list of best driven SUVs in India. Although the car is based on the premium Honda Jazz hatchback, it gets new features that prevent it from being mistaken for a twin.

The Korean car manufacturer Hyundai launched the Venue compact SUV in India at the beginning of 2019. It is currently the best-selling SUV thanks to its modern styling and versatile cabin. The sub-4m SUV is based on an all-new platform and is similar to Hyundai’s global and larger SUVs, including the Palisade. It also gets Hyundai’s Blue Link car technology with internet capability and many connected car features.

The SUV is available in 3 powertrains – a 1.2-litre 82hp petrol engine, a 1.5-litre 99hp diesel engine and a 118hp 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The naturally aspirated petrol model returns 17.52 kmpl, while the turbocharged petrol engine returns 18.2 kmpl and the automatic 18.15 kmpl. Diesel Hyundai Venue is expected to return 23.4 kmpl.

Next up on our list of the best SUVs in India is the Tata Nexon compact SUV, which first broke the cover of its concept form at the Delhi Auto Expo 2014. The sub-4 meter SUV is also one of the most powerful SUVs in its range. . It is available with two engines – a 120bhp 1.2-litre turbo-petrol and a 108bhp 1.5-litre turbo-diesel.

The torques of the gasoline unit and the oil burner are 170 Nm and 260 Nm. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox or an AMT unit. The SUV is said to return an ARAI certified fuel economy of 17 kmpl on petrol and 21.5 kmpl on diesel. The compact SUV comes with several premium features such as multiple driving modes, a floating dashboard display and a ‘Grand Central Console’.

The list of the best driven SUVs is completed by the new Maruti Brezza, which is equipped with a 1.5 liter four-cylinder petrol engine. This engine has mild hybrid technology which makes it very fuel efficient. It is capable of producing 101 horsepower and 137 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. The Brezza LXi and VXi variants are claimed to return an ARAI certified fuel economy of 20.15 kmpl. Higher models return 19.8 km/l.

At the end of 2020, Nissan launched the sub-4-meter Magnite SUV. It is based on the CMF-A modular platform, which also supports the Renault Kiger. The small SUV has two engines – 1.0L NA petrol and 1.0L turbo petrol. The former produces 72 PS and 96 Nm, while the latter produces 99 PS and 160 Nm of torque.

Gearbox options include a 5-speed MT and an automatic CVT. The NA engine offers 18.75 kmpl, while the turbo unit has an ARAI certified fuel economy of 20 kmpl. Turbo CVT returns 17.7 kmpl.

Kiger also shares chassis and engine features with Magnite. It is offered with two engines – a 72bhp 1.0-litre NA petrol and a 99bhp 1.0-litre turbo petrol.
