8 Indians out of 11 killed in Maldives fire


Male (Maldives): According to AVAS, eight Indians were among the 11 people who died in a garage fire in M. Nirufehige, Maldives on Thursday.

Police were alerted to the incident at 12:17 (local time), while the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) was notified at around 12:30 (local time). Fire and rescue personnel arrived at the scene at 12:33 local time, and the fire was completely extinguished by 4:34. The cause of the fire is still unknown. According to the authorities, 11 people died in the fire. According to AVAS, eight of the dead were Indian citizens and one was from Bangladesh. The nationality of the other two victims is not yet known.

According to the report, sources revealed that some of the dead were trapped in rooms and bathrooms.

IGMH media coordinator Hawwa Afeef told AVAS that one of the two people taken to the hospital for treatment had died. The other man is in critical condition and is receiving medical treatment. The hospital did not provide additional information about the two men who were hospitalized.

The hospital confirmed that ten bodies were found in the structure. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is helping the victims and people evacuated from nearby buildings.

The NDMA has set up a temporary center at the Maafannu stadium to help the victims of the fire.

According to Maldivian National Defense Force (MNDF) Fire and Rescue Commander Ibrahim Rasheed, the incident took place in a building that housed a large number of Indian, Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi migrant workers.

According to the MNDF, the bodies of ten of the eleven dead were found in the building. Ibrahim Rasheed said it is difficult to determine the gender of the deceased.
