A magnitude 6.1 earthquake hits Japan


Tokyo: An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 struck off the southeastern coast of Mie Prefecture, the weather agency there said Monday.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the epicenter of the quake was located at a latitude of 33.6 degrees north and a longitude of 137.5 degrees east and occurred at a depth of 350 km, according to reports the Xinhua news agency.

Tremors were felt in Tokyo and other cities, but no tsunami warning was issued.

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake shook the waters off Taitung County, Taiwan at 9:47 a.m. on Sunday, according to the China Earthquake Network Center (CENC).

The epicenter was tracked at 22.44 degrees north latitude and 121.10 degrees east longitude. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km, the center had said.
