Bareilly: A woman who was badly beaten for not lending her a cigarette died on Friday while being treated at a hospital in Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh.

The news agency UNI, citing police sources, reported that the woman was brutally assaulted by some people after she refused to give a cigarette in Baldin in the Margang district of Bareilly, which led to her death on Friday.

Police Chief (Rural) Raj Kumar Agarwal said Ram Murti Devi (50) was running a grocery store in Lalitpur village.

On Thursday night, her neighbor and cousin Vinod asked for a cigarette with debt, but she refused.

Vinod and her friend attacked her with a stick and rod, seriously injuring her.

Family members admitted the woman to the district hospital, where she died during treatment.

The report stated that she died of her injuries on Friday.

Other reports indicate that her son was severely beaten by the accused.

Police have registered a case at Marjanj Police Station and search for the accused in the case is ongoing.
