After Apple, Google plans to manufacture Pixel phones in India, says a report

New Delhi: Google plans to manufacture some of its Pixel smartphones in India. The Information reported that the company plans to produce between 500,000 and 1 million Pixel phones in India. According to the source, this corresponds to 10-20 percent of Google’s annual shipments of Pixel devices.

For the past three years, Google has not launched its flagship smartphones in India, citing several factors such as supply and demand challenges around the world. If the decision is made to manufacture Pixel phones locally, Google may be able to avoid paying the high 20 percent import duty that India imposes on smartphones. As part of its production-related incentive package (PLI), the government also encourages the domestic production of phones and their components.

In response to trade concerns between the US and China, Google decided to move its Pixel phone manufacturing to Vietnam in 2019. Due to the impact of Covid, it was forced to return to China to produce the Pixel 6 series.

According to reports, the company is preparing to shift production of some of its devices, including the Pixel portfolio, from China. Vietnam has also been discussed this time as a second production location alongside India.

There are more companies involved than Google. Apple also plans to start production of the iPhone 14 in India. Although the company has not admitted anything, there have been rumors that it would leave China due to the country’s growing instability and negative effects.

The company that will become Google will introduce its new Pixel smartphones and its first wristwatch on October 6 at a meeting in Brooklyn. The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones, the first Pixel watch and Pixel Buds Pro will be announced at the event.
