Reacting to Sidhu’s resignation, former Punjab leader Amarinder Singh tweeted that Sidhu is not fit for Punjab. He wrote, “I told you so…he is not a stable person and not fit for the border state of Punjab.”

New Delhi: Navjot Singh Sidhu on Tuesday resigned from the post of Punjab Congress chief, after portfolios were allotted during the tenure of new Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. He tweeted his resignation letter addressed to Congress President Sonia Gandhi. “The downfall of a man’s character stems from a compromise corner. I can never compromise on the future of Punjab and the agenda of Punjab’s welfare.”

Punjab Congress general secretary Yoginder Dhingra, minister Razia Sultana, state party treasurer Gulzar Inder Chahal and state party general secretary (in-charge training) Gautam Seth resigned from their respective posts in solidarity with the former BJP MP.

News24 investigates the possible reasons for the cricketer-turned-politician’s resignation from the post of Punjab Congress President:

Sidhu wanted CM post

Navjot Singh Sidhu himself wanted to become the Chief Minister. That’s why he campaigned so strongly against Amarinder Singh. When Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa’s name was proposed in place of Amarinder Singh, Navjot Sidhu opposed his name. Sidhu and his supporters rejected his candidature.

Portfolio problem

It is learned that Sidhu did not agree with the decision to give the all-important Home Ministry to Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. Sidhu was reportedly in favor of retaining the CM’s portfolio, but it was given to Randhawa. Earlier, Sidhu had rejected the move to make Randhawa the chief minister, saying if the party was choosing a Jat Sikh face, it should be him.

Worried high command

Sidhu was also upset with the high command for not defending him vigorously after Captain Amarinder Singh called him “anti-national” over his presence at the swearing-in ceremony of Pakistan PM Imran Khan, a party source said. Huh. Congress leaders had termed it as an emotional out of the captain.

Sidhu’s ignorance recommendations

Channi was considered the last straw, ignoring Sidhu’s recommendations to appoint Siddharth Chattopadhyay as Director General of Police and DS Patwalia as Advocate General.

Sidhu and the Punjab Bureaucracy

One who controls the bureaucrats runs the government in the state. The bureaucratic changes in Punjab were planned after the resignation of Amarinder Singh. Congress insiders say that Sidhu wanted to have bureaucrats of his choice in top positions, including in the Chief Minister’s Office.

The cricketer-turned-politician’s exit drew widespread reactions. Here are some reactions:

Reacting to Sidhu’s resignation, former Punjab leader Captain Amarinder Singh tweeted that Sidhu is not fit for Punjab. He wrote, “I told you so…he is not a stable person and not fit for the border state of Punjab.” The captain tweeted without naming or tagging anyone.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi – who was Sidhu’s choice at the top post of the state cabinet – said all issues that “troubled” Sidhu would be “disposed of”. Channi, however, cleared the air around him, saying that Sidhu is “not angry with him.”

Congress General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal termed Sidhu’s resignation as an “emotional reaction”. Asked about Sidhu’s resignation, Venugopal said, “All will be well.”

Congress leader Sunil Jakhar hit out at Navjot Singh Sidhu over his resignation as Punjab unit chief and said there was “trust reposed in him by the Congress leadership”. The remarks were in response to the comments made by Sidhu in his resignation letter to Sonia Gandhi in which he said that he can “never compromise” on the future of Punjab. Sidhu replaced Jhakhar as PCC chief.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Tarun Chugh on Tuesday hit out at Navjot Singh Sidhu over his resignation from the post of Punjab Congress chief and alleged that he is unable to bear that a man from the Scheduled Caste community has become the Chief Minister of Punjab. Chugh alleged that Sidhu was “hungry” for the chief minister’s post.
