Akhilesh indicates giving candidate from Amethi in 2024 election

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav on Monday indicated that his party may field a candidate from the Amethi constituency in the 2024 parliamentary elections.

The Samajwadi Party did not field parliamentary candidates from Amethi and Raebareli in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in support of Congress candidates Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.

Akhilesh visited Amethi on Sunday to attend the wedding ceremony of former UP Chief Minister Gayatri Prajapati’s daughter, as indicated in a tweet.

“I was deeply saddened to see the plight of the poor women in Amethi. VIPs have always won and lost here, but this is the condition here too, so what can I say about the rest of the state? Next time, Amethi will not choose big people, but big hearts. SP vows to eradicate poverty in Amethi,” tweeted Akhilesh Yadav along with photos of local women.

The Amethi parliamentary seat has been a Congress stronghold for decades, but the Congress lost it to BJP’s Smriti Irani in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing the people, Mr Yadav also hit out at the BJP. Without taking the name of Iran’s Union Minister, he urged people to defeat him in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

“Cylinder waali is the representative from here. Definitely beat him,” he said.
