In the ad in question, a father can be seen crying at the bride’s farewell. Akshay Kumar stars as a police officer and mocks the father for putting the newlyweds in a vehicle with two airbags. Many claimed that the ad supports the practice of dowry. Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi called it “problematic” and questioned “who has passed such an ad promoting evil and criminal dowry acts”. “It is disgusting to see the government officially promoting dowry,” said TMC leader Saket Gokhale. Just a few days earlier, the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report released on August 29 indicated that 6,753 women will die in 2021 due to dowry harassment. The same data set in 2020 showed that dowry harassment claimed the lives of 19 Indian women every day.
Trinamool Congress national spokesperson Saket Gokhale also took a dig at Gadkari, saying it was “disgusting to see the government of India officially promoting dowry”.
“This ad is the pits. He completely lost the plot. Is it about the wedding, the bride or the fact that the dowry should be a car with 6 airbags – what is it? These government ads are so childish and thoughtless. Couldn’t you have talked about security differently?” tweeted a third user.
As for Akshay, this is not the first time the actor has come under scrutiny for promoting an ad. The actor earlier attracted flak for appearing in a pan masala commercial alongside Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan.
