New Delhi: Film buffs will have to wait a little longer to see Alia Bhatt as Gangubai in celebrated filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’.
The many-delayed magnum opus has been postponed again due to the coronavirus pandemic. Bhansali Productions took to its Instagram account to share the new release date of the film. The caption read, “Watch her rise with strength, courage and fearlessness.
The upcoming film, which also stars Ajay Devgn in a pivotal role and marks his reunion with SLB after his iconic film ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, is produced by Bhansali and Jayantilal Gada (Pen Studio).
The period drama, adapted from one of the chapters of renowned author Hussain Zaidi’s book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’, features Alia in the lead role of Gangubai, one of Kamathipura’s most powerful, beloved and respected madams. 1960s.
‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ also stars Vijay Raj, Indira Tiwari and Seema Pahwa.
The film was earlier scheduled to release in January 2022, when it clashed with ‘RRR’ starring Alia, Jr NTR, Ram Charan and Ajay Devgn as well as the Prabhas-starrer Radhe Shyam.
SS Rajamouli took to Twitter to appreciate the decision to postpone ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ to avoid clash with his directorial venture ‘RRR’.
He tweeted, “Appreciated the decision of Jayantilal Gada and Sanjay Leela Bhansali to extend the release date. Our heartiest congratulations to Gangubai Kathiawadi.”
Apart from ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ and ‘RRR’, Alia will also be seen in ‘Darlings’, ‘Rocky and Rani Ki Love Story’, ‘Brahmastra’ and ‘Jee Le Zara’.
