Los Blancos’ hopes of reaching the knock-out stages were put on hold as Shakhtar led by more than 45 minutes. However, Antonio Rudiger made a dramatic late equalizer, receiving a nasty blow to his face in the process.
Big blow to Antonio Rudiger in UEFA Champions League
For most of the game, Madrid were far from their best, but their mounting pressure explained in the second half that the former Chelsea defender was being used as a part-time striker to force a result. That strategy has paid off and means they will play Champions League knockout football once again in the new year.
Antonio Rudiger has reassured fans that he is fine after worrying pictures of the defender in a pool of blood after scoring for Real Madrid.

In a tweet, Rudiger said he was fine by saying, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. I’m fine – thanks for all your messages.” He also uploaded an Instagram story with his face and a picture of him blindfolded saying “we are alive”.
Eden Hazard gave another golden opportunity to seal his right to the starting XI. He struggled to make any impact on the game and was replaced just before the hour mark by Vinicius Jr., who was initially rested before El Clásico.
Ancelotti and his players will be eyeing Sunday’s El Clasico to travel to Warsaw. After winning their opening three games in the Champions League, the clash against Barcelona is certainly more significant.
