New Delhi: The Apple company not only announced its new operating system iOS on the first day of its annual WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) 2022, but also announced the M2 (M2) chipset for MacBook Air and laptops. The M2 chipset is powered by the second generation 5-nanometer technology. It is better than M1 in many ways. In comparison, if seen, M2 will get 18 percent faster CPU, 35 percent faster GPU and 40 percent faster neural engine. It also delivers 50 percent more memory bandwidth.

These attractive features and custom technology of the M2 will be seen in the redesigned MacBook Air and the updated 13-inch MacBook Pro. Johnny Suruji, Senior Vice President of Hardware Technology at Apple, said that the M2 is going to usher in a new generation of M-series chipsets and it will also leave behind the great features of the M1. He said that our entire focus is on performance and M2 will see faster CPU, GPU and faster neural engine.

Know about the special features of M2-

With more transistors, you will get more memory

The System on Chip (SoC) design of the M2 is built on the second generation 5 nanometer technology which has 20 billion transistors. This is 25 percent more than the M1. These additional transistors will serve to improve the features of the chipset such as the memory controller. The memory controller offers a memory bandwidth of 100 GB per second which is fifty percent higher than the M1. With 24GB of fast unified memory, the M2 is capable of handling even complex workloads.

Power performance even better

If compared with the latest 10 core PC laptop chip, the CPU present in the M2 delivers almost double the performance at the same power level. Apart from this, M2 also manages to deliver peak performance in just a quarter of the power.

On the other hand, if we talk about the latest 12-core PC laptop chip, then it requires more power to increase performance and this is the reason why it is found in hot, thick and noisy systems. These systems also have shorter battery life, but the M2 is capable of delivering 90 percent peak performance after using just a quarter of the power of the 12-core chip.

Apple’s next generation GPU will also be seen in the M2 which has 10 cores. The GPU has two more cores than the M1. The 10-core delivers a great boost in graphics performance with better memory, and the M2 delivers 25 percent better graphics performance even at comparable power levels. Not only this, 35 percent better performance is also seen at maximum power.

When compared with the integrated graphics of the latest PC laptop chip, the M2’s GPU delivers 2.3x faster performance at the same power level and also manages to deliver peak performance using just one-fifth of power. The battery life in the M2 is excellent due to the high performance/watt. This battery cools down and runs very quietly. Games in which a lot of graphics are used or even during high quality video editing, there is no problem of any kind.

Apple’s Next Generation Custom Technology

With the help of M2, Apple has worked to bring its latest custom technology to the Mac, due to which better security is seen. The neural engine can process 15.8 trillion operations per second which is 40 percent more than the M1. Apart from this, the high bandwidth video decoder will be seen in the media engine which supports 8K video. Apple’s powerful Pro-Res video engine makes it possible to stream 4K and 8K video over multiple streams. At the same time, Apple’s latest Secure Enclave provides best-in-class security. Better image noise reduction will also be seen through a new image signal processor.

Faster performance cores will be seen in the new CPU, while the efficiency core has also been improved for great performance. Together, these two provide multi-thread performance, which is 18 percent higher than the M1. This is the reason why tasks that require a lot of CPU, the M2 is able to do them with very little power. For example, creating music using multiple effects or applying complex filters to photos, the M2 will make all these tasks much smoother.
