Ottawa: When it comes to dynamic visual acuity, athletes have an edge over action video gamers, a new study from the University of Waterloo has found.

Christine Dalton from the Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science said, “Athletes involved in sports with a high level of movement – ​​such as soccer, football, or baseball – often score higher on dynamic visual acuity tests than non-athletes “

Dalton continued, “Our research team wanted to investigate whether action video gamers – who, like e-sport athletes, are regularly immersed in a dynamic, fast-paced 2-D video environment for large periods of time – Will also show improved levels of dynamic visual acuity comparable to athletes competing in a physical sport.”

While visual acuity (clarity or acuity of vision) is often measured under static conditions during annual checkups with an optometrist, research shows that dynamic visual acuity tests measure a person’s ability to see moving objects clearly. There is a more effective solution – a baseline physical and skills needed for success in e-sports alike.

Using a dynamic visual acuity skill-test designed and validated at the University of Waterloo, researchers found that physical athletes scored highly on dynamic visual acuity tests as expected, with action video game players tested closer to non-athletes.
