Punia won bronze medals in the Asian Championships in 2019 and 2020. Along with this, Deepak won a silver medal in the 2019 wrestling championship.
Punia qualified for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics after reaching the semi-finals of the 2019 World Wrestling Championships. Given his early success on the international stage, Deepak is considered one of wrestling’s strong medal contenders.
Earlier, Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia won the gold medal in the men’s freestyle 65 kg category.
Another Indian women’s wrestler, Anshu Malik, won the silver medal but could not hold back the tears from rolling down her face after losing the match.
