Bajrang Punia won gold in wrestling


Birmingham: India’s ace wrestler Bajrang Punia won gold medal in wrestling for India as he defeated Canadian player McNeil Lachlan in the final Commonwealth Games 2022.

Punia won the game 9-2 in the men’s freestyle 65kg category. With the win, Punia played a brilliant game to successfully defend the gold medal.

Earlier, India’s female wrestler had won a silver medal but could not stop her tears from running down her cheeks after losing the game.

Bajrang Punia won gold in wrestling: previous record

Indian wrestler Punia won the gold medal in the last edition in Australia. Fighting in the 65kg freestyle category, the wrestler proved his dominance as he contributed to the tally of 12 medals in wrestling with a stupendous gold.

Punia, who won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics last year by defeating Daulette Niyazbekov 8-0, will be a strong contender for a medal at the Commonwealth Games.

He received Arjuna Award in 2015 and after that he also received Padma Shri (2019), Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award (2019) and FICCI India Sports Award (2020). He also works as a Gazetted Officer OSD Sports in Indian Railways.
