Mann is the AAP’s chief ministerial candidate in Punjab. Harpal Kaur said, “I am very happy. His father must have been happy too, seeing his son becoming the Chief Minister… He was on the right path even earlier, is on the right track even today…”.
Meanwhile, Bhagwant Mann will take oath as the Chief Minister of Punjab at Bhagat Singh’s village Khatkarkalan and not at the Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh.
Mann said in Sangrur, “I will take oath as Chief Minister in Khatkarkalan, the village of Bhagat Singh, not in Raj Bhavan.” He also said that during his tenure there would be no photographs of the Chief Minister in any government office. “There will be pictures of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Babasaheb Ambedkar,” he said.
Mann won from Dhuri assembly constituency in Sangrur district by a margin of 58,206 votes against Dalveer Singh Goldy of INC. Mann was announced as AAP’s chief ministerial candidate on January 18. The party claimed that the decision was taken after conducting telephonic elections to decide the chief ministerial candidate.
Born in 1973 in Satoj village of Sangrur, Mann started his career as a comedian. He started his political career in 2011 with the Punjab People’s Party, which is headed by Manpreet Singh Badal. In 2012, he contested from Lahargaga constituency but lost. Later, he joined Aam Aadmi Party in 2014 and contested from Sangrur Lok Sabha seat. His importance in Punjab politics increased when he defeated veteran Punjab leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, who was then with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
Mann has been elected to the Punjab Lok Sabha seat of Sangrur for two consecutive terms since 2014. He gained popularity with his satire in the TV show ‘Jugnu Mast Mast’. He also acted in many other comedy shows. As AAP wins Punjab, it will be the party’s first victory in the state and a major improvement from its performance in the 2017 elections when it finished second only to the Congress. (ANI)
