Box Office Clash Dhunki vs Salaar

In a clash of titans at the box office, Shah Rukh Khan’s latest venture, ‘Dunki,’ faced a formidable challenge from Prabhas’ ‘Salaar: Part One- Ceasefire,’ leading to a noticeable drop in earnings on its second day. Released worldwide on December 21, ‘Dunki’ marks Shah Rukh Khan’s third film of the year, following ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Jawan,’ both of which found success in the list of 2023’s biggest hits.

The Rajkumar Hirani-directed ‘Dunki’ struggled to match the opening day collections of Shah Rukh’s earlier releases this year. While ‘Pathaan’ amassed Rs 57 crore and ‘Jawan’ raked in Rs 89.50 crore on their respective first days, ‘Dunki’ managed to collect Rs 29.20 crore. The film’s fortunes took a hit on the second day, facing direct competition from Prabhas’ ‘Salaar,’ as its earnings further declined to Rs 20.50 crore on December 22, bringing the total Indian box office collection to Rs 49.70 crore.

Produced by JIO Studios, Red Chillies Entertainment, and Rajkumar Hirani Films, ‘Dunki’ features an ensemble cast including Boman Irani, Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, Vikram Kochhar, and Anil Grover alongside Shah Rukh Khan. Despite facing a challenging start, the film earned Rs 58 crore worldwide, according to data shared by Red Chillies Entertainment.

Trade expert Sumit Kadel expressed optimism, stating that the film’s collection is expected to surge significantly over the extended weekend until Monday. However, the mixed reviews from audiences raise questions about the movie’s long-term performance at the box office.

The real challenge for ‘Dunki’ lies in the overwhelming success of ‘Salaar: Part One- Ceasefire,’ directed by Prashanth Neel. Released in multiple languages, including Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindi, ‘Salaar’ emerged as the biggest opener of 2023, earning an impressive Rs 95 crore net on its first day. The film’s stellar performance is anticipated to continue during the Christmas and New Year holidays, making it a strong competitor for ‘Dunki.’

As the two films battle it out at the box office, industry insiders and audiences alike eagerly await the final verdict, with the festive season likely to play a crucial role in determining their ultimate success or setback.
