Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II dies at the age of 96


London: Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-lived and longest-reigning monarch in the United Kingdom, died on Thursday afternoon, the royal family was informed Thursday night.

“The Queen passed away peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” the royal family said in a tweet at 11pm.

The post added: “The King and Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Buckingham Palace announced that the 96-year-old was under medical supervision in Balmoral after doctors became concerned about her health.

The Queen withdrew from the virtual Privy Council on Wednesday, a day after Liz Truss was appointed prime minister at her home in the Scottish Highlands.
