Canada begins Covid-19 vaccination for 5-11 year olds

Toronto: Canada begins vaccination against the COVID-19 virus for children aged 5-11 years. Canada has joined a handful of countries, including Israel and the United States (US), in offering coronavirus vaccine shots for this age group.

At the Montreal Convention Center, a few dozen young people were among the first to receive an authorized Pfizer dosage for this age group since last Friday.

Posters of unicorns, hockey players and pet dogs have been put up at nursing stations to help reduce the fear of needles in children.

“I wasn’t really scared, but I was tense,” 10-year-old Victor told AFP.

Jean-Nicolas Aube, a spokesman for the Montreal Health Authority, said: “Registrations for children are increasing in Quebec, as the government gives the green light to pediatric vaccination, an indicator that the population response is indeed excellent.”

On Twitter, Quebec Premier Francois Legault was pleased to learn on Wednesday morning that 115,300 registrations had been made in a matter of hours.

“Together we can make a difference,” he told the media.

In neighboring Ontario, a handful of children were vaccinated on Tuesday in Toronto due to early delivery of doses. Canada’s most populous province officially launched its campaign on Thursday.

“This is the first time in Canada and thousands of children in Toronto are getting the best protection they can against COVID-19 in the coming weeks,” Toronto Mayor John Tory said in a statement.

On Wednesday, Mayer appeared at a clinic with Polkaru, a green kangaroo-like character from a local children’s television show, to announce that more than 31,000 children have been vaccinated so far.

Canada has one of the highest vaccination rates against COVID-19 in the world, with more than 85 percent given two doses to people over 12.

Health Canada on Wednesday approved Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose COVID-19 vaccine for people 18 years of age and older.
