World Press Freedom Day 2023: Every year on May 3, the world celebrates World Press Freedom Day to highlight the value of press freedom and the difficulties journalists around the world face in doing their jobs. Based on the recommendation of the UNESCO General Conference, the United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed the day in 1993.
The main purpose of this day is to maintain freedom of the press and protect the independence of the media. As stated in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it also reminds governments of their responsibility to respect and protect the right to freedom of expression.

World Press Freedom Day 2023: History
In 1993, the UN General Assembly declared May 3 the International Day of Press Freedom. This declaration was created following a recommendation made at the 26th General Conference of UNESCO in 1991. The 1991 Windhoek Declaration, a declaration on press freedom written by African journalists and delivered at a UNESCO seminar that ended on May 3, also catalyzes the declaration.
