Chhello’s Show Is India’s Official Pick For Oscars, Netizens Resent

New Delhi: Pan Nalin’s Gujarati’s Chhello Show became India’s official selection at the 95th Academy Awards. The film was named in the Best International Film category. It’s surprisingly at odds with speculation about RRR or the Kashmir files getting the nod.

Chhello Show, set against the backdrop of cinemas in India, takes its journey from celluloid to digital. Speaking of achieving this feat, Nalin said, “I never imagined a day like this would come. Now, I can breathe again and believe in cinema that entertains, inspires and enlightens.”

However, the move by the Film Federation of India (FFI) also upset a section of moviegoers, who voted for films like RRR and The Kashmir Files. Even a few netizens showed their annoyance with the decision by directing #RRRForOscars.

Responding to controversies over FFI’s decision, director and actor TS Nagabharana revealed that Chhello Show was chosen “unanimously” by a 17-member jury.

“We know everyone was expecting RRR. But the idea was to have a film that represents the country in a uniquely Indian way. The Chhello Show transcends ordinary Indian reality narrative in a broader sense while pulling emotional strings,” he says.

TS Nagabharana served as the chair of the Academy Awards selection committee.
