Talking to the media in Kannur, the NCP leader expressed willingness to welcome Thirvananthapuram MP Tharoor into his party.
He said, “If Congress MP Shashi Tharoor comes to NCP, we will give him a warm welcome. Shashi Tharoor will continue to be the MP for Thiruvananthapuram even if the Congress party rejects him. I don’t know why Congress is ignoring Tharoor.
The last time the Congress Party decided to nominate a non-Gandhi face to its top post, Tharoor emerged as a viable option. He contested the elections against senior party leader Mallikarjun Kharge. However, Tharoor lost.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge won a tearful victory as he secured 7,897 votes against Tharoor, narrowly managing to secure 1,072 votes.
Uneven playing field?
In an interview with NDTV ahead of the polls, Congress MP Tharoor made controversial comments, saying, “There are certainly aspects that represent an uneven playing field.”
However, he clarified later. He said, “…in several PCCs, leaders welcomed and met Kharge Sahab. They didn’t do the same to me. I visited the PCCs but the PCC bosses were not available. I’m not complaining, but don’t you see a difference in treatment?”
Tharoor said he could be a catalyst for change for the old party to revive the party’s presence in the country.
