During the holiday season, sales of luxury cars skyrocket

New Delhi: Leading luxury car makers expect 2022 to outpace 2019 in terms of sales as demand for high-end models remains strong.

Despite the current chip shortage, companies are anticipating a strong holiday season in terms of exports.

2019 was the industry’s strongest year ever for deliveries, with domestic volume of luxury cars topping 40,000 units, its best ever.

“The industry has become more resilient and as the third wave of Covid was not as severe there has been a steady rebound,” Naveen Soni, President of Lexus India, told PTI in an interaction.

In an interview with PTI, Naveen Soni, President of Lexus India, said: “The sector has become more resilient and as the third wave of Covid was not as severe there has been a slow rebound.”

Soni noted that both the industry and Lexus India had a successful start to the new year.

“We hope demand for luxury cars will exceed pre-pandemic 2019 levels, which were the highest ever, while demand for Lexus in India this July exceeded our highest demand since operations began in 2017 ‘ he added.

When asked about the holiday sales, Soni said, “We expect demand for Lexus vehicles to be three times what it has been since the brand’s launch in 2017.” Lexus cars, which are hybrids, are highly technological and dependent on the availability of semiconductors, but the brand is trying its best to deliver the cars to customers on time, he added.

Martin Schwenk, MD & CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, explained that the company expects the strong sales momentum of the second quarter to carry over into the next holiday season due to the continued high level of customer satisfaction.

Schwenk added that the company’s product launches haven’t changed and that it will unveil the much-anticipated EQS luxury sedan in both its AMG and production versions over the holiday season.

Similar comments were echoed by Audi India, who said demand had been rising steadily in recent months and the automaker expects the trend to continue.
