Earthquake of 7.1 magnitude hits Tonga, tsunami…


New Delhi: An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale shook Tonga on Friday. The US Geological Survey has issued a tsunami warning.

The epicenter is located in the city of Neiafu

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake’s epicenter was at a depth of 10 km (six miles) and about 200 km southeast of Neiafu. The city is located northeast of the Pacific archipelago.

A tsunami warning has been issued

“Dangerous tsunami waves are possible on the coasts within 300 kilometers of the epicenter of the earthquake,” said the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Seismic activity is quite intense in terms of occurrence. Rather, the country is a collection of 171 islands with a population of 100,000.

Tonga was previously hit by a massive volcanic eruption

In January of this year, it was shaken by the eruption of the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai volcano. According to researchers at the University of Bath, this is one of the strongest such events in modern times.
