Charles and Camilla were in town to dedicate a statue to their late mother, II. To Queen Elizabeth.
According to The Washington Post, the role of Great Britain and the British royal family has been repeatedly questioned in countries where the British queen still rules.
Earlier this year, while Prince William and his wife were on vacation in the Caribbean, some activists called on the monarchy to apologize and support reparations for slavery.
Moreover, it was not the first time that the newly appointed king met with opposition. In the days following Queen Elizabeth’s death, several activists who protested were arrested.
In Edinburgh, Scotland, a man was arrested for waving a sign that read “abolish the monarchy.” Another woman was jailed in Oxford, England, for shouting “who elected her?” when the document formally recognizing Charles as king was read.
This is not the first time that eggs have been thrown at a British monarch. During the Queen’s 1986 royal tour of New Zealand, she was also hit with an egg by a woman who opposed a treaty with British Maori tribes.
III. However, King Charles expressed interest in discussing the issue. According to The Washington Post, during Obama’s visit to Leeds, he spoke with artists involved in a project about Britain’s involvement in slavery.
