An encounter broke out between a joint team of terrorists and security forces in Tulran village of South Kashmir’s Shopian after the terrorists turned down repeated offers of surrender by the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Official sources told the news that soon after receiving information about the presence of terrorists in this south Kashmir village, a team of police, army and CRPF launched an anti-militancy operation.

Officials said as the joint team of forces intensified the search for the suspected residential house, the hiding militants opened fire on the party, triggering an encounter in retaliation.

The joint team of forces, after evacuating the civilians from the targeted house and the surrounding area, repeatedly asks the terrorists to lay down their arms and surrender to the security forces. J&K Police DSP Ashraf Shaheen was seen in a video appealing to the trapped terrorists to lay down their arms and surrender.

The operation has been going on for more than 3 hours as the security forces were trying to persuade the terrorists to surrender.

Officials said that firing has started in the area and two to three terrorists are believed to be trapped.

It is pertinent to mention here that this is the fourth encounter in J&K in less than 24 hours.

Earlier, two terrorists each were killed in Anantnag and Bandipora on Monday, while anti-militancy operation is going on in Surankot Poonch.

Five Army jawans, including a JCO, were killed in Jammu region’s Poonch sector in the early hours of today when new infiltrators attacked an Army search party, another jawan was also injured when the Dera ki Gali was some distance from the encounter site in Poonch. The firing started a kilometer away.

Army officials said that a counter terrorist operation was launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in the area of ​​Shahdara near the border of Poonch-Rajouri districts in Jammu and Kashmir. During the operation, the terrorists opened heavy fire on the army personnel, injuring one JCO and four soldiers fatally.

Army officials told News24, after the initial encounter, the terrorists fled to the nearby Bhangai village, which falls in Rajouri district, and the encounter is still on.
