New Delhi: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Tuesday seized a container load of foreign brand cigarettes worth Rs 17 lakh at Gujarat’s Mundra port.

“Specific intelligence developed by DRI Ahmedabad officers indicated that a smuggling syndicate was trying to smuggle foreign brand cigarettes into India through the Mundra sea port,” news agency ANI quoted a senior DRI officer as saying.

Based on intelligence information, the container was identified and tracked, the policeman added.

As a result of the search of the container, 850 cartons of “Manchester” brand cigarettes were found.

Each carton contained approximately 10,000 cigarettes. Accordingly, a total of 85,50,000 foreign brand cigarettes valued at 17 million rupees were seized.

This is the fourth major seizure of cigarettes and e-cigarettes by DRI Ahmedabad this financial year. The total value of the seizures exceeded 100 million rupees.
