Himachal Pradesh reports first Omicron case, Canada returnee tests positive for new variant of COVID-19

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh on Sunday reported its first case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. A woman who returned from Canada has tested positive for the new strain of coronavirus.

A state health department official said the woman from Khaliyar in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi had recently tested positive for COVID-19 after coming from Canada. Her swab samples were sent for genome sequencing on 18 December and the result showed her positive for the Omicron variant.

Director National Health Mission, Shimla, Hemraj Bairwa said that the woman has tested again on December 24 and her report has come back negative.

The Himachal Pradesh Health Department said that three close contacts of the woman were also tested and their reports also came back negative.

Earlier in the day, Madhya Pradesh reported its first case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. Eight people who recently arrived in Indore from other countries have tested positive for the new strain of COVID-19.
