Honda will soon launch a new compact SUV

New Delhi: Japanese media reported that Honda is preparing an unprecedented compact SUV for global markets. The new SUV will be smaller than the Japanese or European HR-V and will be up against the Toyota Yaris Cross. The report claims that Honda’s new compact SUV is preparing for its world premiere next spring, between March and June 2023.

This compact SUV will be based on the current model or Jazz International. It will be powered by the same 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine that also powers the Thai City RS engine.

This engine powers the new City RS, generating 120 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and torque of 173 Nm between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm. A seven-speed continuously variable transmission will be standard.

There’s a chance Honda’s new compact SUV will get the 1.5-liter e:HEV that also powers the City hybrid and Fit. The hybrid system consists of a 98-horsepower, 1.5-liter, fuel-efficient Atkinson cycle.

The drive train is also powered by two electric motors – one as a generator and the other as a traction motor. The maximum usable power is 126 hp and the maximum combined torque is 253 Nm (the motor delivers 127 Nm and the electric motor delivers 253 Nm).

Honda SUV coming to India

It is also said that Honda plans to introduce a production version of the RS SUV concept in Indonesia this month. This model will face Toyota Raize, Daihatsu Rocky and Kia Sonet.

Honda’s new compact SUV for the Indian market will be based on the Amaze platform. The new model will compete with Hyundai Venue, Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet and others. It will likely share engine options with the City Sedan.
