IAF completes 90 years, hosts annual parade


New Delhi: The Indian Air Force began celebrations of its 90th anniversary at Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh on Saturday. This is the first time the annual parade and flyby will be held outside of Delhi-NCR. Defense Secretary Rajnath Singh wished the force earlier this morning.

“Greetings and best wishes to all brave IAF Air Warriors and their families on Indian Air Force Day. The IAF is known for its bravery, excellence, achievement and professionalism. India is proud of its men and women in blue. Wishing them blue skies and happy landings,” Singh tweeted.

IAF to conduct an air show

The IAF will conduct an hour-long air show on the lake, which will be attended by nearly 80 military aircraft and helicopters, including the recently introduced local-built Prachand Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), which will demonstrate its flight capabilities during the flyby.

It is the first time that the IAF decided to hold its annual Air Force Day parade and flyby outside of the Delhi NCR.

The Chief of Air Staff will unveil the new combat uniform pattern for IAF personnel, officials said Friday.

Ingeniously designed light combat helicopter

Light Combat Helicopter Limited Series Production (LSP) is an in-house designed, developed and manufactured state-of-the-art modern combat helicopter containing approximately 45 percent Indigenous content by value, which will gradually increase to over 55 percent for the SP version .

The new helicopter is capable of air combat and will help the armed forces fight slow-moving aircraft, drones and armored columns during conflicts.

In addition to LCH ‘Prachand’, several other aircraft including Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, Sukhoi, Mig-29, Jaguar, Rafale, IL-76, C-130J and Hawk will be part of the flyby. Among the helicopters, Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv, Chinook, Apache and Mi-17 will be part of the flight display.

CDS pays homage to the National War Memorial

On the eve of Air Force Day 2022, the Defense Chief of Staff and the three Defense Chiefs laid wreaths at the National War Memorial to pay homage to those who have made the supreme sacrifice in the nation’s service.

Air Force Day marks the official launch of the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 1932. Each year the day is celebrated in the presence of the chief and senior officers of the Indian Air Force. The Air Force was formally raised in support of the UK Royal Air Force in 1932 and the first operational squadron was created in 1933. Major IAF operations since then include Operation Vijay, Operation Meghdoot, Operation Cactus and Operation Poomalai in 1950.
