New Delhi: The International Day of Democracy is celebrated every year on September 15, with the aim of promoting and defending the principles of democracy. In the words of the United Nations, “The International Day of Democracy provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world. Democracy is both a process and a goal, and only with the full participation of the international community can the ideal of democracy be realized.”

This year, International Democracy Day focuses on the “importance of media freedom for democracy, peace and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals”.

It was established through a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly in 2007, which encouraged governments to strengthen and consolidate democracy. International Democracy Day is to provide an opportunity for people to participate in democracy and urge the government to respect people’s rights. The day was observed for the first time in 2008 and since then, it has been marked every year globally.
