Jalpaiguri train derailment: PM Modi condoles loss of lives in train accident, Railways announces Rs 5 lakh ex gratia


Kolkata: The Bikaner-Guwahati Express of Northeast Frontier Railway zone derailed in a horrific tragedy in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, killing three people and injuring 20. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences to the families of those killed in this train accident.

“Spoke to Railway Minister Shri @AshwiniVaishnaw and took stock of the situation in the wake of the train accident in West Bengal. My condolences to the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery,” the Prime Minister said on Twitter.

Indian Railways has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the dead, Rs 1 lakh for the seriously injured and Rs 25,000 for those with minor injuries. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav wrote on Twitter, “Increased amount of ex-gratia to the victims of this unfortunate accident: Rs 5 lakh in case of death, Rs 1 lakh for serious and Rs 25,000 for minor injuries.”

President Ram Nath Kovind also tweeted to offer condolences to the bereaved families.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu also took to Twitter and said, “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the derailment of Bikaner-Guwahati Express in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I wish them a speedy recovery. I pray to be. Wounded..”
