Jeevan Jyot Kaur won Amritsar East seat, defeating Navjot Sidhu, Bikram Singh Majitia

Chandigarh: Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) chief ministerial candidate Bhagwant Mann won from Dhuri constituency in Punjab by a margin of 82,023 votes. AAP has won 92 of the 117 assembly seats in Punjab. This is also the first time that AAP has won state elections other than Delhi. The ruling Congress could win only 18 seats.

Earlier in 2017, the party had won only 20 seats, while the Congress formed the government by winning 77 seats in the state.

This is a big victory for the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab and Bhagwant Mann will now take oath as the Chief Minister of the state.

The Amritsar East seat was in the news as Congress fielded its state party chief Navjot Singh Sidhu against Shiromani Akali Dal’s Bikram Singh Majithia. Meanwhile, AAP candidate Jeevan Jyot Kaur has won this seat.

Who is Jeevan Jyot Kaur?

Jeevan Jyot Kaur won with 39,520 votes, followed by Navjot Singh Sidhu with 32,807 votes, while Majhitia could win with only 25112 votes. Kaur is the District President of AAP in Amritsar (Urban).

Going to the records, Kaur once called both Sidhu and Majitia leaders as ‘political elephants’ who are always involved in fighting. Kaur has been vocal against both.

She is a social worker who is also known as ‘Pad Woman’ due to her constant efforts to promote menstrual hygiene. She holds the position of a chairperson in SHE. This society works to distribute reusable sanitary pads as they are made of plastic.
