“Met the newly elected AAP MLAs from Goa. Congratulate them on the victory. I wish them all the best and I am sure they will work hard to fulfill all the expectations of the people of Goa,” the chief minister wrote on Twitter.
Venji Viegas won from Benaulim seat, where he defeated former Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress Churchill Alemao by a margin of 1,271 votes. Meanwhile, Cruz Silva defeated Congress candidate Savio de Silva in the Velim constituency. The margin of victory between the two was just 169 votes.
Goa Assembly elections were held in all 40 seats, of which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 20 seats.
Earlier in the day, Goa BJP President Sadanand Shet Tanawade told that the party decides the next chief minister after holding consultations with the national leaders in Goa.
“There is no confirmation yet, I have not received any call from the Centre, it will be decided after meeting with the national leaders of the party in Goa,” Sadanand said.
After BJP, Congress managed to win 11 seats in the state. Independent candidates got three seats, while two seats each went to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak (MGP). Revolutionary Goa Party and Goa Forward Party (GFP) got one seat each.
