Kerala men, women fatter than other states

The National Family Health Survey for the year 2019-20 shows that 70.7% of women in Kerala are obese while 56.8% of men fall under the same category.

New Delhi: The National Family Health Survey for the year 2019-20 shows that 70.7% of women in Kerala are obese while 56.8% of men fall under the same category. Meanwhile, 56.7% of women and 47.7% of men are pot-bellied, according to the national average. In urban areas, 71.1% of women are overweight, while in rural areas, 70.2% of women are obese.

In Kerala, the obesity rate for women aged 15 to 49 is 38.1%. Here, 40.4% women belong to urban areas and 36% from rural areas.

The national average for men is only 24 percent, while the recorded percentage of men who are obese during the age group 15-49 is 36.4%. Here 40.1% males are from urban areas and 33.2% are from rural areas.

However, 9.7% of women in urban areas and 10.1% of women in rural areas fall in the underweight category. 6.9% of males in urban areas and 12.7% of males are underweight from rural areas.
