Lionel Messi is COVID19 positive with three others in the Paris Saint-Germain squad


New Delhi: Lionel Messi is among four players from the Paris Saint-Germain squad who have tested positive for the coronavirus ahead of the team’s French Cup game. Paris Saint-Germain confirmed on Sunday that Lionel Messi, Juan Bernat, Sergio Rico and Nathan Bitumzala had tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

The club tweeted, “Tests conducted during the winter break and prior to the start of training revealed 4 positive cases for COVID-19 among players and 1 positive case among staff. Concerned persons are subject to COVID protocol.”

The club said in a statement that Brazil international Neymar Jr. is being treated in Brazil until January 9 and is expected to return in three weeks. The Brazilian forward is battling an ankle injury last month.

“Neymar JR will continue his treatment in Brazil with members of the Paris Saint-Germain medical and performance staff until January 9. His return to training is still expected in about 3 weeks,” the club said.

“They are currently in isolation and subject to proper health protocols,” the club issued a statement.

Recently, five members of Atletico Madrid tested Covid-19 positive, including manager Diego Simeone, while Barcelona had three more cases among their players on Thursday, the LaLiga club said.

Simeone, captain Coke, midfielder Hector Herrera plus forward Antoine Griezmann and Joao Felix all tested positive for the coronavirus.

All the infected people are asymptomatic and are isolated in their respective homes in compliance with the guidelines.

Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho, defender Sergio Dest and winger ez Abde were the latest to return positive COVID19 tests.

Earlier, Ousmane Dembele, Samuel Umeti and Gavi had tested positive.
