New DelhiMakar Sankranti is considered to be the day of Sun’s transition into Capricorn. According to the Hindu calendar, the Sun moves towards the north on this day. It is celebrated every year on 14 January. It is also celebrated as the first festival of the year. It is said to be the most auspicious day for the Hindu society.
The festival marks the end of the winter season and the beginning of a new harvest season.

This year the Sun is transiting on January 14 at 2.13 pm. Sun will enter Capricorn even before sunset. The best date to celebrate the festival is 14 January.
Makar Sankranti 2022 Timings
This year Punya Kaal Muhurta is 16 hours before Sun’s Sankranti time and 16 hours after Punya Kaal. This time Punyakal will start from 7.15 am on January 14 and will continue till 5 pm. Shubh Muhurta will last for 44 minutes. During this bath, charity, chanting can be done.
Makar Sankranti 2022 Worship Method
Bathing in holy rivers has special significance on the day of Makar Sankranti. However, it is not safe to travel this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, on the day of Makar Sankranti, take a bath in an auspicious time in the morning.
You can mix black sesame seeds, light jaggery and Gangajal in the bathing water. After wearing clothes, fill water in a copper vessel. Mix black sesame, jaggery, red sandalwood, flowers, akshat (rice) in this water. Then offer Arghya while chanting the mantras of Suryadev.
