Mamata Banerjee meets Prime Minister Modi, is scheduled to meet with the President later today

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Bengal Mamata Banerjee meet in Delhi. Various topics, including the GST payments that her government has long demanded, are likely to come up during the conversation. Bengalis often accused the BJP-controlled center of suspending GST payments due to states, especially those governed by the opposition.

Amit Mitra, Senior Adviser to the Chief Minister of West Bengal, said the center had not paid integrated dues to states totaling Rs 27,000 crore in June.

The meeting, which took place just days after the enforcement department arrested Partha Chatterjee, sparked a lot of rumours. The minister was considered a close confidant of Mamata Banerjee and was arrested after large sums of cash were discovered in the home of his assistant Arpita Mukherjee.

The meeting became a topic of contention in Bengal between the BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress. Dilip Ghosh, a state-level BJP politician, was called into custody by Trinamool for making what they considered disrespectful remarks about Ms Banerjee and her family.

During her four days in Delhi, Banerjee will likely meet opposition figures from outside Congress. She will meet with President Draupadi Mormo later today.

The Prime Minister will attend the Niti Aayog meeting on August 7 which will be chaired by Prime Minister Modi. At the board meeting, topics related to agriculture, health and the economy will be covered.

Banerjee had missed a board meeting the previous year. Federalism and non-payment of GST dues are likely to come up at this year’s meeting.
