New York: Michael Keaton will soon be seen returning to his Batman avatar for the upcoming HBO Max superhero film, Batgirl. As per reports, the actor is expected to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne aka Batman, a character he first cast in 1989 under the direction of Tim Burton.

The actor will once again play the Caped Crusader alongside Leslie Grace, who is set to play the role of the same name.

While plot details are unknown, the film centers around Barbara Gordon, daughter of Gotham Police Commissioner Jim Gordon. In the DC universe, Barbara Gordon was first introduced in 1967, and later became recognized as the iconic Batgirl, a female counterpart to Batman.

Interestingly, an attack on the Joker’s character in 1988 paralyzed him, sparking a debate about the portrayal of women in comics and violence against female characters.

Now, according to a report in Variety, while Warner Bros. has declined to comment on Keaton’s casting, JK Simmons is returning to play Jim Gordon after playing Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Brendan Fraser is all set to play the antagonist Firefly in the film.

Batgirls is set to debut on HBO Max in 2022, but an exact release date hasn’t been set. While Keaton would play Batman in Batgirl, Ben Affleck would also return as Batman in the same year’s Warner Bros adventure The Flash, with Ezra Miller essaying the role. Flash is set to release on November 4, 2022.
