Chennai: Tamil Nadu rain In Chennai, people will bid farewell to the new year amid heavy rains. The state Meteorological Department on Friday informed that some districts, including Chennai, would receive “heavy to very heavy” rains.

“We have issued a red alert for Nagapattinam and rest of the coastal districts including Tiruvallur, Chennai are in the orange category for the next two days,” said Chennai Meteorological Department director Puviarasan.

He further said, “The cyclonic circulation pattern persists at an altitude of 5.8 km and is still close to the coast and will move in a slightly east-west direction. Hence, there will be widespread rainfall over Coastal Tamil Nadu.”

A regional meteorological center in Tamil Nadu has also issued a warning to fishermen not to venture into the sea near the coast as strong winds have been predicted.

Meanwhile, schools and colleges in the state have declared a holiday due to rain, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas and parts of Chennai.

Now rain is not a new thing in Chennai. Every year during the northeast monsoon months, Tamil Nadu receives rain showers, flooding roads, submerging subways, disrupting life in Chennai.

On Thursday, Chennai received very heavy rain for six consecutive hours. Three people died due to electrocution. Nungambakkam, Mambalam, T Nagar received over 100 mm of rain. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin takes stock of the flood situation from the flood control room at the Greater Chennai Corporation office. He also visited the waterlogged areas.

Also, a video going viral on social media shows a false ceiling of Chennai’s VR Mall – a commercial complex – collapsing, and rain water falling down the roof. In the mall, people were seen descending the escalators to avoid getting injured.

According to reports Chennai Mall was inaugurated in June 2018. No one was injured in this incident.
