NATO calls Russian referendums ‘sham’; discard his nuclear rhetoric


New Delhi: NATO has issued a statement condemning Russian President Vladmir Putin’s plans to hold referendums in various parts of Ukraine.

The North Atlantic Council said in its statement that “We condemn in the strongest possible terms the plan to hold so-called ‘referendums’ to join the Russian Federation in the regions of Ukraine controlled in part by the “Russian Army”.

Resolution of the aggression against Ukraine

Citing the UNGA resolution on aggression against Ukraine, the statement further said, “as the United Nations General Assembly reaffirmed in its resolution ‘Aggression against Ukraine’ adopted on March 2, 2022 , no territorial acquisition resulting from the threat or use of force may be acquired. recognized as legal. Allies do not and will never recognize Russia’s illegal and illegitimate annexation of Crimea” .

Russian referendums are a farce – NATO

Calling the Russian referendums a sham, the statement said: “The mock referendums in Ukraine’s Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions have no legitimacy and will be a flagrant violation of the UN Charter. NATO in its statement gave immense support to Ukraine to achieve its goals against Russia. NATO allies remain determined to provide political and practical support to Ukraine as it continues to defend itself against Russian aggression.”

NATO aims for peace, security and stability

The statement further emphasized NATO’s goal. It read: “NATO is a defensive Alliance and will continue to fight for peace, security and stability throughout the Euro-Atlantic area. We are united to defend and protect every inch of Allied territory.”
