No plans to privatize Indian Railways: Center

new Delhi: There are no plans to privatize the Indian Railways as it belongs to the Indian government, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav informed the Lok Sabha after some members expressed concern over it on Wednesday.

He said that Union Minister Piyush Goyal has already made it clear that railways will not be privatized. Vaishnav said, “Railway stations, railway tracks, signaling systems, train coaches, everything belongs to the Government of India. There is no plan to privatize railways. Even Piyush Goyal has already clarified that railways will not be privatized.”

Significantly, under the Union Budget, the discussion on the demands for grants of the Ministry of Railways for 2022-23 was started by Congress MP K Suresh on Tuesday.

After this, many MPs of opposition parties including Trinamool Congress, YSR Congress and DMK raised the issue of privatization of railways to put the government in the dock.

Vaishnav hit back at Congress and TMC MPs for questioning the privatization of the Indian Railways and responded to their allegations. “The problem is not with him (Rahul Gandhi) but with the leaders of his party as their leaders don’t know anything,” he said.

There was a heated debate between the Leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and the Railway Minister, over the operating ratio of the Indian Railways. After discussion, the demand for grants of the Ministry of Railways under the budget 2022-23 was passed by voice vote. (ANI)
