Online fraud is on the rise due to growing digital payments


Unified Payment Interface (UPI) has made online payments very fast and simple. No one is surprised by UPI’s success. However, the number of fraud cases in online shopping through UPI has increased. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, as a result of UPI fraud, there has been a significant increase in the number of cyber fraud reports on the National Cyber ​​​​Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP). Between the first and second quarters of 2022, cyber fraud complaints increased by 15.3 percent.

UPI frauds are on the rise:

According to the data, 206,198 complaints were filed in the first quarter of 2022 on the National Cyber ​​​​Crime Reporting Portal, and the number increased by 15.3 percent to 237,659 in the second quarter. In the first quarter of 2022, there were 62,350 UPI fraud complaints, which increased to 84,145 in the second quarter of 2022. This means an increase of 34 percent. However, the main reason for this increase is the increase in UPI payments. According to the RBI, UPI payments grew by 1,200 percent in the fiscal year ended September.

According to a report by the Ministry of the Interior, online financial fraud accounted for 67.9 percent of all cybercrimes. Another common type of financial theft is bank/credit card/SIM swap fraud. In the first quarter of 2022, 24,270 similar frauds were detected, rising to 26,793 in the second quarter. On the other hand, the number of online banking complaints made about the report has decreased. A total of 20,443 online banking complaints were reported in the first quarter of 2022, which has since decreased to 19,267 in the second quarter.

UPI payments, on the other hand, are steadily increasing.
