PM Modi to visit Japan to attend Shinzo Abe’s state funeral

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Japan next week to attend the state funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

During his visit, the Prime Minister will also hold separate meetings with the Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Japan on 27 September 2022 to attend the funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.

Modern Japan’s longest-serving leader, Shinzo Abe, was shot while campaigning for a parliamentary election in July.

The Japanese government has scheduled a state funeral for Abe on September 27. The ceremony will take place in the Nippon Budokan area in Tokyo’s Kitanomaru National Park.

About 4,300 people are expected to attend Tuesday’s service at a hall in Tokyo, according to Japanese news agency Kyodo. About 700 of them are expected to travel to Japan from 218 countries, territories and international organizations. This figure includes 49 current and former leaders from abroad.

Apart from PM Modi, US Vice President Kamala Harris, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck Soo are also to attend the state funeral.
