Prof Sudhir Kumar Jain joins as BHU’s 28th Vice Chancellor

Varanasi: Prof Sudhir K Jain on Friday took over as the 28th Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU). He was on the faculty of IIT Kanpur for 35 years from 1984-2019. Professor Jain holds a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Roorkee (1979) and Masters (1980) and Doctorate (1983) from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena.

The Professor thanked the Rector of BHU, Prof VK Shukla, who has been acting as the Acting Vice Chancellor for the last nearly ten months in BHU for his services and contribution.

Prior to taking over as VC of BHU, Dr. Jain served as the founding director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar for 12 years. He was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors, for distinguished service in the field of science and engineering by the Government of India in 2020.

Dr. Jain has been instrumental in making fundamental contributions to earthquake engineering practice and education in India.

He was actively involved in the development of several important seismic codes in India, and has trained thousands of professional engineers and college teachers in earthquake engineering through his continuing education programs.

After establishing the National Informatics Center for Earthquake Engineering (NICE) at IIT Kanpur, he developed the National Program on Earthquake Engineering Education (NPEEE), supported by the Government of India.

He has also served as a consultant for several major projects such as bridges and petrochemical pipelines, and has published over 150 scholarly papers. His research interests include the study of catastrophic earthquakes, reinforced concrete buildings, bridges and seismic codes.

Dr Jain was elected as an international member of the US National Academy of Engineering in 2021 (one of only 18 selected from India till date) and received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from IIT Roorkee for academic or research excellence in 2019. Did.

Dr Jain served as the President of the International Association for Earthquake Engineering from 2014-18 (the second Indian to hold this position) and was elected as an Honorary Member of the Association in 2021. He was elected a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering. Granted lifetime membership by the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering (NZSEE) in 2003, and 2013.

Dr Jain, in a message to the campus community, invoked the vision of inclusion, nobility and excellence of BHU founder Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya a century ago. They pledged to “promote a culture of mentorship, inclusivity, transparency, collegiality and mutual respect in our joint ambition to elevate this remarkable institution to the ranks of the world’s great universities.”

The professor said students were at the “heart” of the educational enterprise and that enhancing their educational experience and community life with new curricular and co-curricular initiatives “will be a top priority of our faculty and my administration.”

He urged the BHU faculty and staff “individually, collectively and collaboratively to step up at this time” to realize the potential and promise of the University.
