New Delhi: Star shuttler PV Sindhu on Thursday advanced to the next round of the ongoing India Open 2022 at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall in New Delhi.
In an all-India affair, Sindhu defeated Ira Sharma 21-10, 21-10 to enter the next round. Sindhu continued to dominate in the first game as she finished the game within 13 minutes.
Continuing from where he left off, the 26-year-old took full advantage of his pace and won the match within 30 minutes.
Earlier, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Thursday confirmed that the ongoing India Open 2022 has been withdrawn after seven players tested positive for COVID-19.
“The players returned positive results of the mandatory RT-PCR test conducted on Tuesday. The doubles partners admitted that close contacts of seven players have also been withdrawn from the tournament,” the BWF said in a statement.
The seven players who tested positive for COVID-19 were all Indians and they were – Kidambi Srikanth, Ashwini Ponnappa, Ritika Rahul Thakar, Trisa Jolly, Mithun Manjunath, Simran Aman Singhi and Khushi Gupta.
According to the BWF, players will not be changed in the main draw and their opponents will be given walkovers in the next round.
“The testing protocols have been implemented as per the guidelines of Badminton World Federation (BWF) and Badminton Association of India (BAI) to ensure the health and safety of all the participants,” the statement further said.
