New Delhi: Star tennis player Roger Federer announced his retirement to the world with a sudden announcement. The 20-time Grand Slam winner will play his last event, the Laver Cup, in the next event.

Following the announcement, his longtime competitors, Rafael Nadal, penned beautiful words marking the farewell of fellow tennis great.

Taking to Twitter, Nadal described Federer as his “friend and rival” and said, “Dear Roger, my friend and rival. I wish this day never comes. It is a sad day for me personally and for sports around the world. It’s a pleasure to share so many years with you, living so many wonderful moments on and off the court, but also an honor and a privilege.”

“In the future we will have many more moments to share together, there are still so many things to do together, we know this. For now, I really want to be your wife, Mirka, your kids, your family.” Wishing you all the happiness and enjoyment of what lies ahead of you. I will meet you in London,” he said.

More than 1500 matches in 24 years

Federer said- “I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1500 matches in 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than ever before. Now I have to recognize that this is the end of my competitive career. Federer further thanked his wife, Mirka, who stood by him at all times.
