Rajiv Kumar appointed as next chief election commissioner


New Delhi: Senior Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Thursday appointed as the chief election commissioner in the Election Commission of India.

An official notification from Ministry of Law and Justice informed that Kumar will assume charge of office of the Chief Election Commissioner from the May 15 after incumbent Sushil Chandra will resign from his post on May 14. 

In this regard, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju also extended his greeting to the next election commissioner. The Union Minister tweeted, “In pursuance of clause (2) of article 324 of the Constitution, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Rajiv Kumar as the Chief Election Commissioner with effect from the 15th May, 2022. My best wishes to Shri Rajiv Kumar.” 

At the time of Kumar’s appointment, he was the chairperson of the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB).
