Rajya Sabha polls: Notification issued in Punjab today, candidates can file nomination till May 31


New Delhi: The tenure of Rajya Sabha members including Ambika Soni and Balwinder Singh, elected from Punjab, is set to end on their retirement on July 4, 2022.

Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Dr. S. Karuna Raju said that as per the schedule, the date of issuance of notification for Rajya Sabha elections is 24th May 2022. The last date for filing nominations is May 31, while scrutiny of nominations will take place. 1 June. The last date for withdrawal of candidature has been fixed as June 3.

Raju said that the date of polling has been fixed from 9 am to 4 pm on June 10, while counting of votes will also take place on the same day at 5 pm. He said the election would be completed before June 13.

Nomination papers are to be filed with the Punjab Vidhan Sabha (Secretary of Chandigarh, who is the Returning Officer for Rajya Sabha elections) from May 24 to May 31 between 11 am to 3 pm except on public holidays.

He said that nomination papers are to be filed in Form 2C. He said that the blank forms are available with the secretary of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. He said that typed nomination papers would also be accepted provided the forms are in the prescribed format.

To qualify for members of the Council of State, a candidate must be registered as an elector for any parliamentary constituency in India. To satisfy the Returning Officer concerned at this point, the candidates should produce an attested copy of the relevant entry in the Electoral Roll.

A candidate is also required to make and subscribe an oath or affirmation in the prescribed form before the concerned Returning Officer or any other person authorized by the Election Commission of India. The oath/affirmation will be taken by the candidate after the filing of nomination papers and before the date fixed for scrutiny of nominations.
