New Delhi: France’s all-time top goalscorer Karim Benzema has claimed he has become more ambitious since Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo left Real Madrid, although he credits CR7 for guiding him when they were team-mates in Spain.

“It’s true that I’ve scored more goals since he left, but when he was here I assisted and he helped a lot on and off the pitch. But I knew I was capable of more. When he left, it was time to change my game and my ambition, and so far it’s going well,” Benzema told a press conference.

Karim Benzema and Luka Modrić address the media during their pre-match press conference ahead of their UEFA Super Cup clash against Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Modrić is determined to win the UEFA Super Cup after losing the UEFA Super Cup last time in 2018.

“It was a very nice journey for us as we won the Champions League last year. Now we have the first trophy of the season to play for, we are motivated and ready. We have a good team and we are preparing for a very good season. We give our best. Every competition is important to us. We remember the last time we lost this tournament against Atlético and we don’t want to experience that feeling again,” said Modrić.

Benzema replaced Marcelo as captain of Real Madrid and if the Spanish giants win the UEFA Super Cup, it will be his first trophy after taking the captain’s armband.

“I am very proud to be the captain. This is due to the many jobs I have done since I was little. The only thing that changes is that now I am the first captain, but it will be the same in the sense that I will help my teammates as much as possible. We are the champions of Europe and we will give everything to win this game and bring the trophy back to Madrid,” he said.

Asked if he considers himself the best player in the world at the moment, Karim Benzema replied: “I’m not going to say if I’m the best or not. But every year I try to do my best for the best club in the world. Every year I have to play at a high level, but it is true that last year’s level was very good. I’m just trying to help my team in the games. I’m not thinking about Marcelo’s record, but I’m trying to win as many trophies as possible. I’ve always said that collective trophies are more important than individual ones.”
