Rumi Jaffery: ‘In ‘Chehre’ I moved out of comfort zone, Amit ji said do as you want to…’


New Delhi: Amitabh Bachchan-starrer ‘Chehre’ has been featured in the list of top 10 best films from around the world released annually by global media and entertainment firm Alpha 1 Media and Big B is excited about it. The list is called ‘Top 10 List for A1films 2021’. The list is made up of movies pulled from Hollywood, Bollywood, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Far East.

In an exclusive conversation with News24, Rumi Jaffrey revealed about many anecdotes related to the sets.

When asked about his feelings and emotions on being selected among the top 10 best films around the world, he said, “We made the film with a lot of love and hoped that it would reach as many audiences as possible. It is honestly amazing. Looks like our efforts have finally paid off. I am extremely happy about it.”

On his experience of working with veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan, director Jaffrey said, “Working with Big B is literally every director’s dream, everyone wants to meet him, work with him and I am for it. Blessed to be able to. Live my dream. I am so lucky as this is my fourth time working with him. I wrote for him twice, and directed him twice.”

The filmmaker also opened up about Amitabh Bachchan’s generosity as he did the entire film for free. He said, “Amit ji did the entire film for free and it was unexpected for us as well. When I and Anand went to see him, discussed the film, he heard the story and said that I will not charge any fee for it, I will do this. Won’t charge any fee for the film. We were shocked, we literally forced them but they didn’t listen to us. I don’t want my fees to be a burden on this film. So, this film will be one of those hits from the beginning. I Will never forget this, will never be able to thank him enough. He even paid for his hotel stay and chartered grounds.”

“He did it all because of the script, he liked it. He showed his best confidence in me, supported me, liked my script so much that he didn’t charge at all. I look forward to making a film on my own comfort. Joan, do something which I have never done and this script was my chance so Amit ji showed his confidence and said whatever you want, do what you want, I am there.”

Talking about her relationship with Amitabh Bachchan she said, “We have a relationship of 25 years, we are like friends despite the difference of age and experience. We meet often, share our poems, Poetry and all. We are very close and we share a lovely bond.”

The film was shot in a snowy location with mostly middle-aged, aged people. Sharing the experience, he said, “Everyone was very supportive, we shot in Delhi before Poland. We were told that Poland is extremely cold in December. Also, late actor Rishi Kapoor told me that he shot ‘Fanna’ in Poland. ‘ They were lighting the bonfire but everyone liked seeing Amit ji, because he was so comfortable and warm all the time. He did his work with utmost ease.”

On his plans to work with Big B in future, he said, “If it was in my hands, I would work with him again and again because it is so much fun. His dedication, discipline, his contribution is amazing. Yes, I do.” Am working on a project and may work with him soon. I have done many films but this one is very special for me because it has so many special things in it. It is the only Indian film which has been named in top 10 best films across the world. Has been selected. And I am extremely proud of it.”

Talking about Amit ji’s famous monologue, Jaffrey said, “It was not an intention but it just happened. And Amit ji wanted to give a special message to the society through this film. After the last dialogue was ready, the next day when the scene was to be shot, Amit ji came on the set, I spoke the action and he uttered the entire monologue in one take and the whole team started clapping for him after saying the cut and lasted for a whole minute. The total was 14 minutes and it was the longest dialogue ever, that too in the first take.”

On his experience working with other actors in the film, Rumi said, “If I talk about Anu Kapoor, we all know that she is an outstanding actor. Dhritiman Chatterjee is a veteran actor from Bengal, Raghubir Yadav and All the stars are great. Bringing all the big weight of cinema into one film was really great and wonderful. I consider myself lucky.”

“This is Krystle D’Souza’s debut film and she acted with full dedication and devotion. It was wonderful to work with Rhea Chakraborty as well. My film technicians have contributed to the film and it is because of them that the film was made so beautifully. And the world is appreciating it.”

He finally opened up about the set featured in the film. He told, “The set was made in Mumbai for the shooting of the interior of the house. And when it comes to the exteriors, we have made it through VFX. All the rest of the action road, tree fall was shot in Poland.”

On his plans to work with Rhea Chakraborty again, he said, “Till last year, before COVID-19, I was planning because at that time Chehre was going to release in April and at that time I was shooting with Sushant Singh. Had decided to start. Rajput and Rhea Chakraborty.”

On Rhea Chakraborty’s Bollywood future, Jaffrey said, “I think she will receive a warm welcome. Things change with time. There is no closure in the matter, but nothing concrete has happened. People in her and her family Have sympathy for him. Have suffered a lot. The industry is looking for his return to films and they will welcome him with both hands.”

Talking about his previous films, genres; He said, “I love scripting and writing films and enjoy it. It is my passion and I am fond of comedy as well as intense films. I have written scripts for a lot of comedy films and this time my intention is Had to direct and make a film. Everyone was shocked.”

“I was delighted when people saw it. When the trailer of the film was out, most of my friends – journalists, actors – said that they were finding it hard to believe that I had made the film. They said they loved me so much. Know for all the people years and seeing the movie they thought they were watching some Hollywood thriller. It gave me a kick and I was feeling great. This image is formed in people’s mind that a person who can act in comedy film Writing the script, he is just rooting for one genre. It will be an advantage for me as I will be able to make films of different genres and people will have more faith in me.”

He also talked about the criticisms he faced during the shoot. The filmmaker said, “When I used to talk to my friends about the film, they used to say that I have gone mad because I am shooting 70 percent of the film indoors and it is like a daily soap or serial. It will be like this. And now the post release results of the film are making me proud.”

On his film getting global recognition, he said, “Like Chehre, other films will be different now. They will not be regular.”

Talking about his next project, he said, “I don’t want to promise my next time as COVID-19 has changed the whole scenario of everything and everyone.”

“I am working on a script and when the situation normalises, I will start casting and start shooting,” he said.
